It's official - Ocean Refresh is now a B Corp

We’ve got good news… Ocean Refresh are very proud to announce that we are now a certified B Corporation!

We’re joining a community of 4,049 companies—including Ben & Jerrys, AllBirds, Toms & Patagonia, that use business as a force for good.

From day one we’ve striven to do business differently, to create products that would form part of the solution – not more pollution. When Ocean Refresh was founded in 2019, our mission was to do everything possible to make our oceans cleaner and help rid them of plastic and ocean waste. This has remained at the forefront of everything we do, from the materials we ethically source and use in our products to the charity partners we work with and support.

So what exactly is B-Corp?

In a nutshell, B Corp is to business what Fairtrade is to coffee. B Corps are businesses that meet the highest verified standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability. It is one of the only certifications that is not for a product or service, but for the whole business behind the product or service.

The official definition, in their own words is:

Certified B Corps are for-profit companies that use the power of business to build a more inclusive and sustainable economy. They meet the highest verified standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability. There are more than 3,900 B Corps in 130 industries and 60 countries around the world.

Why did we apply to become a B-Corp?

When we heard about B Corp, we felt like our missions were kindred spirits so we decided to start pursuing certification last year. Since then, we’ve analysed and audited every corner of our business across four categories – governance, employment, community and environment. Over 200 questions, two rigorous assessments & lots of cups of coffee later, we’ve managed to develop and formalise a lot of the things we were already doing to bring us up to the B Corp standard.

Based on this, we were given an overall score based on a range of things from our mission, vision and ambitions to employee diversity, energy use and the way we commute to work. Companies who score more than 80 points (out of 200) are officially certified and, to ensure we all maintain our commitment, must be recertified every three years. Our impact score is 89.6 which we’re pretty proud of considering the average for brands in our industry is just 50.9. We’re delighted to have met the standard but there’s plenty for us to improve on, using the B Corp principles as our roadmap.

What’s next for Ocean Refresh?

While we are proud to be part of the Certified B Corp community, our impact efforts don’t end there. We recognize there are many opportunities to improve and we have our work cut out for us. This is only the beginning. We hope that our B Corp certification will inspire more UK brands of all sizes and from all sectors, to undertake the rigorous assessment process to put people and the planet above profits and not just commit to doing less harm, but to do more good.
